Summary

OCDT9841 - Farewell Bend

 

The person in this position protects Oregon highways and structures by educating, monitoring, regulating and providing technical assistance to effect compliance with motor carrier laws, rules and regulations involving size, weight, registration, and safety laws and regulations.

Profile

  • Employee will be required/may be required to use a vehicle to conduct business; you must possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record or be able to provide an acceptable alternate method of transportation.
  • Required to work flexible work shifts to provide coverage 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Travel is required with some overnight stays.  Must lift and move 35-pound portable scales from awkward positions.  Daily communications with individuals with diverse points of view who may be confused, uncooperative, irate, or hostile, in order to solve problems/issues or during enforcement actions.
  • Employee will be required to use a vehicle to conduct business; you must possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
  • Due to extraordinary budgetary shortfalls, Oregon state government is continuing cost reduction measures which include mandatory unpaid time off (furlough days) and suspending salary step advancement during the 2009-2011 biennium.  Positions are subject to these measures based upon representation, and salary range.  In general terms, employees are subject to 10 – 14 furlough days, and will not receive salary step increases until at least August 31, 2010.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze vehicles at platform scale facilities and portable scale sites. Within guidelines, independently determine appropriate type(s) of law enforcement action(s) including warnings, uniform traffic citations, placing vehicles or drivers out of service and/or detaining vehicles and drivers for noncompliance.
  • Monitor weight station bypass routes; drive to remote duty assignment locations in state vehicles; perform routine patrol of assigned areas looking for overweight/oversize/unsafe commercial motor vehicles; may issue citation(s) and/or require operator to proceed to a weight station.
  • Compute and collect scheduled bail money and issue receipts.
  • Maintain knowledge of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures governing vehicle size and weight, overweight and over dimensional operations, inter-jurisdictional agreements, bail schedules, court procedures, vehicle registration and weight-distance tax. Use resources and information proficiently.
  • Provide technical training to commercial motor vehicle drivers, owners and carrier officials as to laws pertaining to size and weight.  Advise industry representatives how to maximize the use of hauling equipment and minimize future violations.
  • Prepare and provide officer reports and expert testimony representing ODOT in court concerning disputed citations.
  • Research and respond to inquiries from courts, the motor carrier industry, other agencies, and the public regarding motor carrier laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

  • Two years of public contact/customer service experience which involved dealing with the public in person or by phone, providing information about services/programs, or explaining and/or applying laws, rules, regulations/procedures; AND experience or training using computers to retrieve and input data.

  • You will be subject to a computerized Criminal Background and Driver's License check if offered employment.  Your driving record will be considered unacceptable for any of the following offenses.  Offenses include but are not limited to:

·         Misdemeanor or felony traffic offense in the last 36 months.  This includes reckless driving, driving under the influence of intoxicants, failing to perform the duties of a driver, criminal driving while suspended or revoked, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer and other; or the equivalent.

·         Felony revocation of driving privileges or suspension caused by a felony or misdemeanor or the equivalent within the last 36 months.

·         More than 3 Class B traffic violations in the last 12 months or the equivalent.

·         Class A violation or the equivalent in the last 12 months.
